This work explores with humor and grace the price one pays to pursue the sublime and the cost when one follows, or doesn’t, one’s authentic self. Inspired by the real life stories of pianist Van Cliburn, violinist Isaac Stern and super conductors Carlos Kleiber and Claudio Abbado, this drama/comedy unfolds with humor and grace in a lush Italian villa, where three generations of brilliant female Chinese musicians meet to celebrate the matriarch’s 80th birthday. Secrets, jealousies, lost dreams and future hopes collide. “(Fermata is)…engaging and subtle…loaded with rich ideas about artistic legacy, familial love, a father’s failings…Cheng is a formidable force.” — Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post (5/19/15) See all the details...
