(720) 504-3655 Combining the power of ancient dance forms with the exotic sounds of the Balinese gamelan, Tunas Mekar will perform a variety of instrumental and dance pieces including the Colorado premiere of Belibis, a stunning contemporary dance depicting an Indonesian grouse, with professional Balinese dancer Ni Ketut Marni. Also on the program is a new arrangement of Pak Lasmawan’s piece Tirta Bhuana, the popular Condong Legong dance, and Sekar Gendot, a composition for the courtly instrumental “love gamelan.” The second half of the concert will feature guest Balinese dancer I Gusti Ngurah Kertayuda performing numerous Topeng (mask) dances. Topeng features an ornately costumed, mask-wearing performer who interprets traditional narratives including Bondres (Common Man), Dalem (King), Tua (Old Man), Penasar (Narrator) and Keras (Prime Minister) culminating with Joged (Social Dance). Our project focuses on the group’s origins, history, longevity, challenges in maintaining an all volunteer community ensemble, and plans for the future as our journey passes to a new generation. Videotaping of interviews and research into historical documents and photos is already well underway. An important aspect of this transition is bringing our current members to Bali to introduce them to the energy that captivated our founding members in 1990 and for the current ensemble to experience the cohesion of studying and performing together in Bali. This experience will provide a deeper understanding of Balinese culture through performing at secular and sacred events, and by reconnecting with the group’s established Balinese community. Tunas Mekar is looking for public support in raising $95,000 toward this important project.
