Join Tunas Mekar at The Mercury Cafe for An Afternoon of Balinese Music & Dance and a celebration of the upcoming launch of our Indiegogo project “The Power of Community: Documenting 25 Years of an American Gamelan Ensemble”.

Our project focuses on the group’s origins, history, longevity, challenges in maintaining an all volunteer community ensemble, and plans for the future as our journey passes to a new generation. Videotaping of interviews and research into historical documents and photos is already well underway.

An important aspect of this transition is bringing our current members to Bali to introduce them to the energy that captivated our founding members in 1990 and for the current ensemble to experience the cohesion of studying and performing together in Bali. This experience will provide a deeper understanding of Balinese culture through performing at secular and sacred events, and by reconnecting with the group’s established Balinese community. Tunas Mekar is looking for public support in raising $95,000 toward this important project.

Join us at this celebratory event where we will feature new and traditional instrumental pieces and dance pieces performed with the ensemble’s gamelan angklung instruments along with a screening of our campaign promotion video. We will also have on display historical photos, postcards and posters.
